Frequently Asked Questions

Is the difference significant between in-state and out-of-state tuition?

California Community Colleges
$26/unit (in-state) $197/unit (out-of-state)

California State University
$2,864 (in-state) $122,420 (out-of-state)

University of California
$6,141 (in-state) $22,504 (out-of-state)

Is my undocumented status confidential in the CSU system?
AB 540 requires that state colleges and universities keep student information confidential. The immigration status of the student cannot and will not be disclosed with immigration officials or any other third party. Federal law under Educational Rights and Privacy Act also protects student’s privacy.

Are all AB 540 students undocumented?
No. Over two thirds of AB 540 students in the UC system are U.S. citizens who left the state temporarily but are now back in California wanting to attend college.

Do I qualify for state or federal financial aid?
AB 540 students who are undocumented should not apply for any state or federal financial aid (FAFSA, Pell Grant or Call Grants) since they would not be eligible to receive such aid. In fact, applying for this type of aid may affect the students’ legalization process.

NOTE: If you are a nonimmigrant with a currently valid visa (e.g. student or tourist visa). You DO NOT qualify for in-state tuition under Ab540. Make sure to talk to your counselor, since there might be other resources available for you.
